Pac-Man Strategy Guide: Ghost AI Secrets
Since its arcade debut in 1980, Pac-Man has captivated millions of players worldwide. What many players don’t realize is that Pac-Man is not a game of random ghost movement. Each of the four ghosts operates on a unique mathematical algorithm designed to trap you.
Understanding how ghost AI works is the secret to clearing mazes consistently and breaking high-score records.
The Secret Behind Ghost Personalities & AI
Each ghost has a distinct targeting algorithm programmed into its code:
1. Blinky (Red Ghost - Shadow)
Blinky is the direct pursuer. His target tile is Pac-Man’s exact current position. As dots decrease on the board, Blinky speeds up (becoming “Cruise Elroy”).
2. Pinky (Pink Ghost - Speedy)
Pinky attempts to ambush Pac-Man. Her target tile is 4 tiles ahead of Pac-Man’s current direction. If Pac-Man is moving up, Pinky targets 4 tiles up and 4 tiles left due to a legacy code quirk.
3. Inky (Cyan Ghost - Bashful)
Inky is unpredictable because his target vector uses a combination of both Blinky’s position and Pac-Man’s position. If Blinky is close to Pac-Man, Inky will flank you aggressively.
4. Clyde (Orange Ghost - Pokey)
Clyde alternates between chasing Pac-Man and retreating. When Clyde is more than 8 tiles away from Pac-Man, he targets Pac-Man directly. As soon as he gets within 8 tiles, he retreats to his home corner (bottom-left).
4 Pro Strategies for High Scores
1. Master Cornering Speed
Pac-Man moves slightly faster when taking turns than when moving in a straight line. By pre-steering your arrow keys or swipe gestures into a turn before reaching an intersection, Pac-Man executes a seamless corner turn without losing speed!
2. Use Side Tunnels for Emergency Escapes
Ghosts move at half-speed inside the side warp tunnels, while Pac-Man maintains full speed. If ghosts are closing in from multiple directions, duck into a side tunnel to create a safe distance.
3. Maximize Power Pellet Combos
Don’t eat ghosts individually. When you grab a Power Pellet (Energizer):
- 1st Ghost = 200 points
- 2nd Ghost = 400 points
- 3rd Ghost = 800 points
- 4th Ghost = 1,600 points
Pro Strategy: Lure 3 or 4 ghosts close to a Power Pellet before eating it. Eating all 4 ghosts on a single pellet nets 3,000 points!
4. Group the Ghosts into a Pack
Because ghost AI is deterministic, turning rapidly back and forth in a clear corridor causes Pinky and Clyde to clump behind Blinky. Keeping all ghosts in a single train behind you eliminates the risk of being ambushed from ahead.
